How to shop for home insurance in Texas
These steps summarize TDI's consumer guidance. We don't recommend policies or coverage amounts.
- Get sample prices on TDI's HelpInsure.com, then contact your top choices for quotes (TDI).
- Work with an independent agent who can compare policies from different companies (TDI). TDI says about 160 companies sell home coverage in Texas (TDI, May 2025).
- Check the license of any agent or company with TDI's lookup or by calling 800-252-3439 (TDI).
- Ask about discounts and compare deductibles; TDI's home insurance guide explains coverage types.
- Avoid a gap: don't cancel your current policy until you have the new one or a written statement of coverage (TDI).
- If two companies turn you down, the Texas FAIR Plan may sell you a policy through an agent; coastal wind and hail coverage may come from TWIA (TDI). TDI notes surplus lines insurance has fewer consumer protections (TDI).
- Flood is separate: home policies don't cover flood damage (TDI).
Get free home insurance quotes from a licensed Texas agency
Clearline Labs is not an insurance agent or agency and is not licensed to sell insurance. We don't sell, solicit or negotiate insurance, explain policy terms or give coverage advice. If you ask us to, we pass your request to one Texas-licensed independent insurance agency. We may be paid a flat referral fee that does not depend on whether you buy anything.
